Assessing the necessity of a lightning protection System at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, Northern Nigeria

Abstract
Lightning strikes pose significant risks to
infrastructure and human safety, particularly in regions with high thunderstorm
activity. This study assesses the necessity of installing a lightning
protection system (LPS) at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Bauchi,
Northern Nigeria—a region prone to seasonal thunderstorms. Using historical
meteorological data, geospatial analysis, and risk assessment frameworks, the
study evaluates the vulnerability of the institution’s buildings and electrical
systems. Findings indicate a high likelihood of lightning strikes due to the
school’s expansive infrastructure and elevated terrain, coupled with the area’s
climatic conditions. The paper concludes that an LPS is critical to
safeguarding lives, equipment, and structural integrity, recommending
compliance with IEC 62305 standards. Cost-benefit analysis further supports the
economic viability of such a system.
